Ebay-owned e-commerce company, Magento, has just struck a deal with five new companies to join the ranks of Magento Enterprise Edition customers. The new companies are Hanky Panky, BenQ America, Sugarpova, Vaja, and Farm Fresh to You.
These companies will all be undergoing new website implementations and users will soon get to see their re-vamped ecommerce offerings. The companies that have joined the Magento Enterprise Edition ranks cater to all kinds of demographics.
Hanky Panky is a long-running lingerie company, while BenQ makes electronics for the lifestyle, gaming and corporate markets. Farm Fresh to You is a company that offers farm-fresh food delivered straight to the doors of consumers. Sugarpova is a high-end candy maker and Vaja sells products made of Argentine leather.
Magento is an ecommerce platform that is available in several forms. The free-and-open-source platform is incredibly popular with small and medium sized businesses, especially having in mind huge amount of Magento extensions available. The Enterprise Edition is a premium product with dedicated support, aimed at larger companies.
The Magento ecosystem has grown a lot over the last few years, and now serves more than 150,000 merchants from all over the world. Magento was acquired by eBay in 2011, and is now considered to be a division of X.Commerce Inc.

What the News Means for Magento Users

Magento Free users should be pleased to read this latest news. The adoption of the commercial version of Magento supports the free product in a similar way to the users of Red Hat Enterprise Linux supporting the development of CentOS. As new users join the Enterprise Edition of Magento, this will give the developers more freedom, time and incentive to develop the free version of the software with huge Magento database.
It is always good news to see big companies adopting a platform. This news means that the Magento platform is thriving, and that it will be supported and developed for many years to come.
Ben Presley, head of sales at Magento, said of the new purchases, “We are excited to announce some of the new customers that have joined the Magento family. We’ve seen tremendous adoption of the Magento Enterprise Edition in the market and we are thrilled that we are able to offer a product that helps companies grow, succeed and see a healthier bottom line,” He went on to add< “Our customers come to us first and foremost for the customizability factor – every brand needs to shine through in their sites – but also because they know that in time, as their business expands, their sites can scale to accommodate growing demands.”

Earlier this month, Christopher Nielsen, CEO of CNP Integrations, presented a talk about community building at the Joomla! Day event held at Microsoft’s NERD Center in Boston. The talk, which took place on March 16th, was titled “Answering the right questions for effective community building”.
Joomla! Day is an annual celebration of the Joomla! CMS. Nielsen’s session answered some of the most pressing questions about how to turn Joomla! websites into community driven sites with a self-sustaining, positive atmosphere, which is important for us as well as Magento programmers.
Nielsen outlined a “community building success program”, and explained how, over the last few years he has seen some amazing community building tools emerge. The talk outlined how to build an online community, as well as how to extend the reach of your offline community and bring those offline users to your website. Nielsen believes that the strategies that he described can be used to build a community on any CMS, not just Joomla! However, the power and flexibility of this open-source CMS make it eaiser to extend it and to add must-have community features.
Community building may have stolen the show at the NERD center, but it was not the only thing that was talked about. Other sessions at the celebration included talks about e-learning, marketing, and social interaction. There were presentations by many well known designers, coders, and internet marketing experts. If you use the Joomla! CMS and have never been to one of the celebration days, you should add it to your calendar for next year. It is a great opportunity for networking and learning, and will greatly enhance your business and the way you work with the Joomla! CMS.
CNP Integrations specializes in working with small and medium sized businesses, as well as government agencies and non-profit organizations. The company was a bronze sponsor at Joomla! day.

Web development company NoiseCorp has launched a new cloud security service that is designed to help small business owners protect their websites from malicious content. Their service, called IPVenger, will protect websites from comment spam, 0-hour exploits, and other malicious attacks.
The long-term plan is for the service to be made available for several open-source CMS products, including WordPress, which is used to power almost 70 million websites. The WordPress product is available now, and Joomla and Drupal versions are planned for the near future.
The service uses NoiseCorp’s proprietary CyberThreat Inteilligence to block malware, botnets, comment spam and both known and unknown exploits. The system’s easy to use dashboard offers real-time insights and analytics, and allows webmasters to see the threats that they have been protected from. Users have control over the level of their security settings, allowing them to relax them for updates, testing, or in the unlikely event of a false positive.
The IPVenger product is a WordPress plugin. It is installed and used just like any other WordPress plugin or Magento extension and does not require specialist knowledge or technical skills to operate.
IPVenger is a premium product. Prices for the plugin start a $10/month for a site that has a relatively small amount of traffic, and run up to $45month for medium traffic sites. If you have exceptionally high traffic, then NoiseCorp will work with you to come up with a bespoke plan. This fee goes towards maintaining and updating the plugin as new security threats evolve.
If the price is intimidating, consider the inconvenience (and the lost revenue) that you would experience if your website went down for a long time due to a malware attack. Think of this as being like a burglar alarm for your website. The investment will pay for itself in peace of mind.

Until recently, users who wanted to send web pages to their kindle to read them later needed to install a browser plugin to do so. This isn’t a problem for your home PC, but it is inconvenient for those that read a lot from work, or travel frequently and use shared PCs in hotels and Internet cafes.
To make life easier for programmers, including Magento programmers and for those people, and ensure that web publisher’s content reaches as large an audience as possible, Amazon has released a “Send to Kindle” plugin which WordPress bloggers and other content creators can add to their websites.
The button can currently be seen in action on several popular websites, including Boing Boing, TIME and The Washington Post. We can be sure that many other publishers will add the button in the near future. Publishers can style the button by changing the size, font and color until they find something that fits perfectly with their theme.
To send content to their kindles, all users have to do is click the button. As long as they are authenticated with Amazon, the content they send will be made available on their favorite kindle device (be that the app, or a dedicated reader) the next time that device gets an Internet connection.
If you aren’t currently publishing with Kindle, you should consider doing so. If you update your blog frequently, you may be able to earn some money by making your blog available as a subscription based blog on the service. It’s free to sign up, and Amazon will give you advice on pricing when you add your blog. Even if you decide not to charge, it’s worth having a presence on the service to promote your content an reach as big an audience as possible, and it would be good to have such an option in Magento too.

Responsive web design is the big buzz word for 2013. As Magento developers, we were involved too. If you don’t have a website which looks and feels great on everything from a widescreen computer monitor to a tablet PC, you are in danger of being left behind. Today, users expect to be able to engage with your website on any device that they own, and they are not willing to put up with hard to read pages, horizontal scrolling, or slow load times. Btw, when it comes to Magento, our Magento support completely takes care of that.
Designing responsive web pages, however, is not easy. Device screen sizes are not yet standardized, and creating responsive, slick pages with traditional HTML and CSS is difficult. Designers face several usability challenges, as well as engineering problems relating to differing display capabilities, and the limitations of older devices will low-powered processors and single-touch capable only screens. That’s why Adobe has released the HTML 5 Edge Reflow tool, which makes it easy for designers to determine what a devices display capabilities are, and then resize or move each element on the page to fit that device.
It’s possible to do all of this in code if you’re so inclined, but Adobe’s Toolkit offers a simple, visual way to set breakpoints and manage CSS without having to trawl through huge amounts of code. You can use Edge Reflow to create working comps for your clients, or to export framework code for your back-end developers to build upon. The visual feedback that the tool offers is a boon for designers with all levels of experience.
Edge Reflow is available for members of the Creative Cloud (both free and paid). Members can also get updates for Dreamweaver and Edge Animate, as well as see a sneak preview of Edge Code.
Edge Reflow won’t completely solve the problems designers face when creating pages for multiple devices. You’ll still need to consider very small and very big screens carefully, and create extra assets for super-high resolution retina displays. With that said, it’s does make responsive design far more accessible, and should be a big time saver for designers.

One of the key advertising promises made by WordPress.com when promoting their VIP service is “Stop Worrying About Downtime” – so imagine their embarrassment when their servers suffered an outage earlier this month! It seems that even in the cloud, there are no guarantees of 100% uptime.
WordPress.com’s VIP servers went down for approximately 15 minutes on February 15th – just four days after an earlier issue with their servers had caused poor performance and loading issues for several high profile sites.
Unlike Magento and other eCommerce solutions, WordPress.com is primarily known for its free hosting service, which is popular with hobbyist bloggers, open source projects, and not-for-profit blogs. However, there are many other bloggers that use the WordPress.com service under their own domain names. The list of WordPress.com’s VIP clients includes MSNBC, TechCrunch, GigaOm, and the blog of the Green Bay Packers.
The outage was short, but since it affected so many high-profile sites it was quickly noticed. Automatic issued a statement about the outage, apologizing for the problems, and explaining a little about what caused them. Apparently, some debugging code had been left active, and was trying to connect to a server which had been decommissioned, causing performance degradation.
Once the server was brought back up, there was still some cleanup to do, but everything seems to be back to normal now. Kudos to Automattic for fixing it so quickly.

Developing a good mobile app takes a lot of work. While Apple has tried to make the experience of developing for iOS as smooth as possible, learning XCode and figuring out how to take control of your “face” on the App Store is not a simple undertaking, especially if you come from a web development background instead of the traditional software development space.
There have been several attempts to make rapid app development platforms, including Magento, but many of these do little more than convert website RSS feeds into a simplistic apps that add little value for the end user.
Kleverbeast aims to solve this by offering users a web-based interface that looks and feels like a traditional CMS. Users can build-out their apps in this system, and then once they’ve finished they can turn the app into an .ipa file for publication on the App Store.
Kleverbeast is a subscription service – plans star at $29.99 per month for basic features, and go up to $199 for more advanced features. You can upload your ipa package to the App Store yourself if you have an Apple Developer Account (which costs $99), or you can have Kleverbeast update the app for you. If you decide to let your subscription lapse, then you will still be allowed to keep your app and it will stay active on the store if you’ve uploaded it, but you won’t be able to make any changes to the app unless you resubscribe.
Kleverbeast apps are more attractive and more flexible than the typical “this app is really just a quick link to the website” offerings that many turnkey developers churn out, but the service still follows the template model, so there is always some danger that your app will end up looking strikingly similar to a rival app created by the service. If you’re going to use something like Kleverbeast, take care to customize things as much as possible to ensure you’re offering something of value to your users.

Joomla 3.0 has taken web design and development to a whole new level. The Joomla CMS has been around for a long time, and each update has improved the platform, but Joomla 3.0 is a massive shake-up for it. Let’s take a look at some of the most interesting additions for this version of the platform:

Mobile Ready

Joomla 3.0 greatly improves on what was, until recently, a weakness of this CMS. Older versions were sluggish and overly complex to navigate on mobile platforms. Joomla 3.0 includes a “responsive” template for the main site, and another for the admin panel, making it easy to use, and administrate, Joomla sites from any mobile device.

Easier For Beginners

Joomla’s strength has always been its flexibility, but that flexibility came at a price – usability. Joomla 3.0 is much easier to install, and to manage. The update comes with a new streamlined 30 second installer, and the admin panel has been tweaked to make it much easier to navigate.

Improved Developer Experience

The developer experience has been improved. Thanks to improvements to the JUI library, jQuery and LESS CSS, developers can now do more with less code, similar as for Magento support. The Icomoon font icon library comes with retina-display optimized icons, empowering developers to make sites optimized for iOS devices with retina displays.

Other Improvements

In addition to the above improvements, Joomla 3.0 also features several back-end improvements, security and performance enhancements, and other general tweaks, including an upgrade to the latest version of TinyMCE.
You should back up your database before upgrading, however – the update makes several changes to the database and cleans up a lot of old code. If you have a heavily modified site you may encounter some problems.
Joomla is free and open source, and the update is a free download. If you’re running Joomla, it’s well worth upgrading, and if you aren’t running Joomla, there’s never been a better time to revisit this flexible and powerful CMS. If you tried it a few versions ago, but found it slow, cumbersome or confusing, it’s worth revisiting the platform today. It’s come a very long way in the last few years.
