Magento is an ecommerce platform that is available in several forms. The free-and-open-source platform is incredibly popular with small and medium sized businesses, especially having in mind huge amount of Magento extensions available. The Enterprise Edition is a premium product with dedicated support, aimed at larger companies.
The Magento ecosystem has grown a lot over the last few years, and now serves more than 150,000 merchants from all over the world. Magento was acquired by eBay in 2011, and is now considered to be a division of X.Commerce Inc.

What the News Means for Magento Users

Magento Free users should be pleased to read this latest news. The adoption of the commercial version of Magento supports the free product in a similar way to the users of Red Hat Enterprise Linux supporting the development of CentOS. As new users join the Enterprise Edition of Magento, this will give the developers more freedom, time and incentive to develop the free version of the software with huge Magento database.
It is always good news to see big companies adopting a platform. This news means that the Magento platform is thriving, and that it will be supported and developed for many years to come.
Ben Presley, head of sales at Magento, said of the new purchases, “We are excited to announce some of the new customers that have joined the Magento family. We’ve seen tremendous adoption of the Magento Enterprise Edition in the market and we are thrilled that we are able to offer a product that helps companies grow, succeed and see a healthier bottom line,” He went on to add< "Our customers come to us first and foremost for the customizability factor - every brand needs to shine through in their sites - but also because they know that in time, as their business expands, their sites can scale to accommodate growing demands."
